Doctors hire private guards for safety

The situation is such that even the local chapter of Indian Medical Association (IMA) has come to their rescue by helping them arrange security for medical staff, doctors or hospital. The move has come in the wake of increasing number of cases of kin of patients alleging medical negligence after the death of the patients and creating ruckus at the hospitals.

The IMA has tied up a private security agency and 16 guards are moving around the city in two different groups to keep a tab on the security of medical staff and doctors working at different hospitals.

Dr Ajit Chawla, president of IMA, said, "No doubt security of doctors and medical staff is at stake in and around the city. Although police have ensured to give us all the support but with the number of such cases increasing, we are bound to take step for security of our doctors."

"Since the service began two years ago, we have responded to 72 calls from hospitals and clinics," said Dr Dr Ajit Chawla, president of IMA, adding, "the service has only picked up recently." IMA Jalandhar has been providing it for 15 years.

The security men are currently moving in old and new city areas and respond to any call for help. Recently, they came to rescue of doctors at a private hospital in Sarabha Nagar after a family started protesting against doctors for negligence.
