Prisoner dies at Bolangir jail, relatives cry foul

Bhubaneswar: An undertrial prisoner (UTP) lodged at the Bolangir jail died at Bolangir District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) late on Wednesday night due to alleged negligence in treatment.

Satya Mallick of Dhumamara village was admitted to Bolangir DHH late on Wednesday night after he complained of chest pain. Jena's family and other jail inmates blamed the prison staff and hospital authorities for medical negligence leading to his death.

Sources said Mallick's death sparked tension as fellow inmates accused the jail authorities of having neglected the UTP’s ailment.

Meanwhile, family members of Mallick alleged medical negligence as the main reason behind the death.

As per standard practice, an inquiry will be made by a judicial body into the circumstances leading to the UTP's death.

Meanwhile, senior police officials and Prison authorities rushed to the DHH and jail and took stock of the situation. The body will be handed over the victim’s family after post-mortem.
