KOCHI: The Crime Branch has taken over the probe into death of Shamna Tasnim, MBBS student of Kalamassery Government Medical College, allegedly due to medical negligence. SP Yatish Chandra will head the probe as per an order issued by State Police Chief(SPC) Loknath Behra on November 4 The SPC had given an assurance in this regard to K A Abootty, father of Shamna, when the latter called on him in Thiruvananthapuram last month.
Abootty had expressed dissatisfaction at the probe being conducted by the City Police. Abootty met State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) Acting Chairperson P Mohandas at a sitting held by the Commission on Wednesday. “I have sent the report of Dr Sreekumari, Joint Director of Medical Education, which found medical negligence. Though the Commission issued notices to the government and the Medical College there was no response from their side. So, I approached the SHRC again,” he said.
The state government had suspended two doctors -- Dr Jills George, Head of the Department of Medicine and junior resident Dr Binu-- pending inquiry in the July 18 incident, when the second-year student of medicine, suffered a blackout after she was administered an injection at the Medical College for fever.
