Nayagarh: A woman died due to alleged medical negligence at Nayagarh district headquarters hospital Sunday. The deceased was identified as Jayanti Nayak, wife of Sudarshan Nayak from Nantipur village under Daspalla block. However, irate relatives vandalized the hospital leading to arrest of four.

According to sources, Jayanti was admitted to DHH for the treatment of sickle-cell anemia Friday. Doctors advised her to arrange for a blood transfusion Saturday. However, due to unavailability of A+ blood at the blood bank, the family was advised to collect it from outside. Meanwhile, Jayanti became critical and succumbed by 11:45 pm.
Her family members and relatives had an argument with doctor Pravakar Sahu and alleged that the death was caused by medical negligence.

Meanwhile, the deceased’s brother Jitu Ranjan Parida and some of his friends arrived in the hospital and vandalized the hospital by breaking glasses in the casualty department. They also turned tables and chairs upside down at the medicine distribution centre and three computers.

Subsequently, they broke the motorcycle of the doctor. Properties worth `1 lakh were damaged by the deceased’s family members, it was learnt. Later, they were arrested.
Nayagarh SDPO Jayram Satpathy arrived at the spot and took stock of the situation Sunday morning. However, the incident has brought to focus the chinks in the DHH’s security system.
On the other hand, Dr Pravakar said the death was caused due to sickle-cell anemia, not due to medical negligence.

DMO Rajalaxmi Mohanty said “I had a discussion with the collector regarding security system at DHH. More security forces will be deployed on the hospital premises soon.” A case was registered with Nayagarh town police. PNN
