BARIPADA: Tension ran high in the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) at Baripada on Thursday following death of a pregnant woman allegedly due to medical negligence.
Her family members and locals staged a dharna inside the hospital campus. They withdrew their agitation only after the Collector assured them to take action against the erring doctor.
Jayanti Murmu (28) of Bholagadia village under Khunta police limits was admitted to the hospital for delivery on Wednesday. After a check up, gynaecologist Dr Anjan Sarangi informed her husband that it would be a normal delivery.

Jayanti’s husband, Dasnath alleged that after the check-up the gynaecologist left for a private clinic. When his wife complained of labour pain, no doctor was present in the hospital and she died after three hours. As the news spread on Thursday morning, locals gathered at the hospital and staged an agitation demanding action against the doctor. They also demanded compensation of `10 lakh for family of the deceased woman.

They, however, withdrew the agitation after Collector Rajesh Pravakar Patil asked the accused doctor to go on leave. He also directed ADM, Deben Kumar Pradhan to conduct an inquiry and submit report within a week.
