Newborn dies in Salem PHC, kin stage protest

13 July, 2016

Coimbatore: Villagers staged a protest after a newborn died in a primary health centre (PHC) at Masinaickenpatti village in Salem district on Tuesday. The villagers alleged that the infant's death was due to negligence of a trainee nursing staff at the health centre.

Police said Baby, of Masinaickenpatti village in Salem district, was admitted to the PHC on Monday for delivery. She had labour pain on Monday night but no doctor was present at the centre. A trainee nurse Sathya gave medical assistance to Baby, but her newborn died a minutes later. Meanwhile the mother's health deteriorated and her relatives rushed her to a private hospital.

On Tuesday, the woman's relatives staged a protest in front of the PHC. They refused to receive the infant's body and alleged that negligence on the nurse's side caused the death. They demanded action against Sathya and the absent doctors.

Salem rural police pacified the villagers, who withdrew their protest. The villagers claimed that of the two doctors, one was handling additional charges for Karipatti PHC and three staff nurses, who worked on shift basis but could not give attention to Baby, were posted at Masinaickenpatti PHCs.

Health department officials promised to take appropriate action against doctor and staff nurses for medical negligence. The villagers did not lodge any police complaint.
