Pune: IMA objects to appointment of Ayurveda practitioner as MMC registrar

25 June, 2016

The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Maharashtra, has objected to the appointment of the Registrar, Maharashtra Council of Indian Medicine, who is also an Ayurvedic practitioner, as the new Registrar of Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC). The MMC is a quasi-judicial body that serves as an ethical watchdog and looks into cases of medical negligence. Dr Dilip Wange, associate professor at R A Podar Ayurveda College and registrar of the state’s Ayurveda council has been appointed as the new registrar of the MMC.

In an official letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, MMC members have stated that the Maharashtra Medical Council and Medical Council of India are opposed to cross pathy — prescribing homeopathy and Ayurvedic medicine along with allopathy medicine. “We were surprised that such additional charge of Maharashtra Medical Council be given to Registrar, MCIM,” said Dr Jayant Lele, President of IMA, Maharashtra.
