Pregnant woman dies, medical negligence alleged

Kollam: A 31-year-old pregnant woman died allegedly due to medical negligence on Saturday night at Kottarakkara taluk hospital. The deceased has been identified as Sahida, wife of Baiju, Muslim Street, Kottarakkara. 

According to relatives, the woman was brought to the hospital after she developed labour pain at 8.30pm. Thought the duty doctor attended to her and admitted her to the labour ward, her condition worsened after the doctor allegedly went out of the hospital. She fell unconscious and declared dead after a short while.

 

 

The incident led the infuriated relatives engage in a war of words with the hospital authorities. The situation worsened when a group of Left activists came to the hospital around midnight to protest. Later, after a discussion convened by Dr Jayasankar, DMO-in-charge, resident medical officer Dr Darvin and Kottarkkara sub-inspector Sivaprakash with the relatives, it was decided that an inquiry would be conducted. An inquiry report would be submitted to the DMO in three days. 
 

 

Dr Sreeja, the doctor who attended to the patient, was requested to go on leave until the inquiry got over. Meanwhile, the doctor alleged that she was manhandled by the relatives.
 

 

The relatives have lodged a complaint with the hospital authorities and police. "The police have registered a case based on the complaint. Sahida's body was taken to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, where autopsy was done after inquest. The police have launched a probe into the incident," said B S Sajimon, circle-inspector, Kottarakara.
 

 

The body was released to relatives after autopsy on Sunday morning.
