Pregnant woman dies in hospital relatives allege medical lapse

KOLLAM: In a suspected case of medical negligence, a 31-year-old pregnant woman died after an in-charge doctor allegedly abandoned her in the operation theatre.    

The deceased is Shahida, wife of Baiju, of Muslim Street at Kottarakkara here. At the time of death, she was nine-month pregnant. 

The victim had sought medical aid at the hospital on Saturday night and was move to the operation theatre around 11 pm. She was later found dead in the theatre with foam coming out of her mouth. 

According to relatives, Shahida was in good health as she had come to the hospital by foot. They alleged that she died because of the lapse from the part of doctor, who was reportedly in-charge of the operation theatre, as he left out immediately after admitting her. 

They then lodged a complaint with the police.  The body, which was taken to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital for autopsy, was later handed over to the relatives.  Meanwhile, Deputy DMO Jayasankar told ‘Express’ that a team from Directorate of Health Services will inquire into the incident and will submit a report within three days.
