Medical negligence at Kolkata hospital claims woman's life after childbirth

13 February, 2016

A woman died at Kolkata’s Lady Dufferine Hospital in Bow Bazar area allegedly due to medical negligence by the staffers there on Saturday. Twenty-five year old Ruksana Begum—hailing from city’s Entally area—died after giving birth to a girl child.

According to her family, Ruksana started bleeding immediately after giving birth to her child. The hospital staffers had apparently sent her husband, Mohammed Shamim, to fetch blood for her, without informing him about the required blood group. “The staff and doctor here handed over a slip to me, asking me to get blood from Medical College blood bank. I rushed to the institute immediately but only to find that the slip had nothing mentioned about the blood group. I kept running from pillar to the post. But unfortunately the delay cost my wife’s life. She gave up after battling for long,” claimed Shamim.

Shamim further alleged that the hospital authorities snatched the blood requisition slip from him to hide the matter. Later, Shamim lodged a complaint against the hospital authorities with Muchipara Police Station.

Iamin tried contacting the hospital authorities but they refused to comment on the issue.
